National Volunteer Week is NOW

National Volunteer Week begins April 12 and continues until the 18th. National Volunteer Week is about giving back to the community and inspiring people everywhere to step outside of their daily routines to help someone else. We work together, play together and National Volunteer Week is about spreading the message that we can come together as a unit for a common goal.

The ability to volunteer is one that is often overlooked. Many people lead busy lives, so taking the time out to volunteer is one of the best things you can do to help your fellow man. This week especially highlights people who do volunteer, either as individuals or as a corporation. National Volunteer Week is a Points of Light program with thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week.

Volunteering is one of those things that are not only good for the community, but good for your emotional well-being. It can give many a sense of purpose, and keep them active, both of which are great for cancer prevention. If everyone took the time to volunteer for just one activity then the world would be a much better place.

National Volunteer Week has grown since its inception in 1974, and with good reason. Our society has evolved and we are becoming more sympathetic to our fellow man. Technology has also made it easier to volunteer. With just the click of a button, volunteers can commit to many more events and activities, and access volunteer information faster than ever before. Volunteer events can also be advertised via social media, and can start small and grow large with increasing numbers.

Becoming involved in your community makes life better. Don’t let volunteering intimidate you. If you are new to volunteering, select a few organizations and groups that are important to you. When you volunteer for a cause you are passionate about, it makes you feel twice as good, and allows your volunteer time to pass quickly.

There are many people throughout the world who volunteer, and you should be one of them. We spend much of our lives listening to disheartening stories in the news, and volunteering is one small way you can make a positive impact. Let go of the mentality of what the world can do for you, and embrace what you can do for the world.

According to Points of Light, there are many ways to encourage others to get in the spirit of volunteer week. Take time to get involved this week. By using hashtags and sharing positive experiences you can help National Volunteer Week gain momentum.

Here are a few tips for this week:

  • During National Volunteer Week, Points of Light encourages everyone to share their volunteer stories, including photos and videos, across social media – Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. They can be fun, emotional, inspirational – just share your story. Use the hashtag #NVW2015

  • The goal is to get #NVW2015 to trend during National Volunteer Week.

  • Tag friends and get them to share their stories, too.
